Yusufali: | By the break of Day |
Pickthall: | By the Dawn |
089.002 | |
Yusufali: | By the Nights twice five; |
Pickthall: | And ten nights, |
089.003 | |
Yusufali: | By the even and odd (contrasted); |
Pickthall: | And the Even and the Odd, |
089.004 | |
Yusufali: | And by the Night when it passeth away;- |
Pickthall: | And the night when it departeth, |
089.005 | |
Yusufali: | Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? |
Pickthall: | There surely is an oath for thinking man. |
089.006 | |
Yusufali: | Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- |
Pickthall: | Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, |
089.007 | |
Yusufali: | Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, |
Pickthall: | With many-columned Iram, |
089.008 | |
Yusufali: | The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? |
Pickthall: | The like of which was not created in the lands; |
089.009 | |
Yusufali: | And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- |
Pickthall: | And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; |
089.010 | |
Yusufali: | And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? |
Pickthall: | And with Pharaoh, firm of might, |
089.011 | |
Yusufali: | (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, |
Pickthall: | Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, |
089.012 | |
Yusufali: | And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). |
Pickthall: | And multiplied iniquity therein? |
089.013 | |
Yusufali: | Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: |
Pickthall: | Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. |
089.014 | |
Yusufali: | For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. |
Pickthall: | Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. |
089.015 | |
Yusufali: | Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." |
Pickthall: | As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. |
089.016 | |
Yusufali: | But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" |
Pickthall: | But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. |
089.017 | |
Yusufali: | Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! |
Pickthall: | Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan |
089.018 | |
Yusufali: | Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- |
Pickthall: | And urge not on the feeding of the poor. |
089.019 | |
Yusufali: | And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, |
Pickthall: | And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. |
089.020 | |
Yusufali: | And ye love wealth with inordinate love! |
Pickthall: | And love wealth with abounding love. |
089.021 | |
Yusufali: | Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, |
Pickthall: | Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, |
089.022 | |
Yusufali: | And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, |
Pickthall: | And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, |
089.023 | |
Yusufali: | And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? |
Pickthall: | And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? |
089.024 | |
Yusufali: | He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" |
Pickthall: | He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! |
089.025 | |
Yusufali: | For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, |
Pickthall: | None punisheth as He will punish on that day! |
089.026 | |
Yusufali: | And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. |
Pickthall: | None bindeth as He then will bind. |
089.027 | |
Yusufali: | (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! |
Pickthall: | But ah! thou soul at peace! |
089.028 | |
Yusufali: | "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! |
Pickthall: | Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! |
089.029 | |
Yusufali: | "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! |
Pickthall: | Enter thou among My bondmen! |
089.030 | |
Yusufali: | "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! |
Pickthall: | Enter thou My Garden! |
Let us pray (Sura 20, Ayat 114) 'Ya Rabbi Zidni Ilma!' ('O Lord! Increase me in knowledge.') and seek spiritual help (ta'yid) to understand our great faith.
