"Can he who was dead, to whom We gave life, and a light whereby he can walk amongst men, be like him who is in the depths of darkness, from which he can never come out?" — Holy Qur'an 6:122

Holy Quran Verses from Pickthall and Yusufali's Translations

Surah Naba': The Tidings

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Yusufali:    Concerning what are they disputing?
Pickthall:   Whereof do they question one another?
Yusufali:    Concerning the Great News,
Pickthall:   (It is) of the awful tidings,
Yusufali:    About which they cannot agree.
Pickthall:   Concerning which they are in disagreement.
Yusufali:    Verily, they shall soon (come to) know!
Pickthall:   Nay, but they will come to know!
Yusufali:    Verily, verily they shall soon (come to) know!
Pickthall:   Nay, again, but they will come to know!
Yusufali:    Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse,
Pickthall:   Have We not made the earth an expanse,
Yusufali:    And the mountains as pegs?
Pickthall:   And the high hills bulwarks?
Yusufali:    And (have We not) created you in pairs,
Pickthall:   And We have created you in pairs,
Yusufali:    And made your sleep for rest,
Pickthall:   And have appointed your sleep for repose,
Yusufali:    And made the night as a covering,
Pickthall:   And have appointed the night as a cloak,
Yusufali:    And made the day as a means of subsistence?
Pickthall:   And have appointed the day for livelihood.
Yusufali:    And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments,
Pickthall:   And We have built above you seven strong (heavens),
Yusufali:    And placed (therein) a Light of Splendour?
Pickthall:   And have appointed a dazzling lamp,
Yusufali:    And do We not send down from the clouds water in abundance,
Pickthall:   And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water,
Yusufali:    That We may produce therewith corn and vegetables,
Pickthall:   Thereby to produce grain and plant,
Yusufali:    And gardens of luxurious growth?
Pickthall:   And gardens of thick foliage.
Yusufali:    Verily the Day of Sorting out is a thing appointed,
Pickthall:   Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time,
Yusufali:    The Day that the Trumpet shall be sounded, and ye shall come forth in crowds;
Pickthall:   A day when the trumpet is blown and ye come in multitudes,
Yusufali:    And the heavens shall be opened as if there were doors,
Pickthall:   And the heaven is opened and becometh as gates,
Yusufali:    And the mountains shall vanish, as if they were a mirage.
Pickthall:   And the hills are set in motion and become as a mirage.
Yusufali:    Truly Hell is as a place of ambush,
Pickthall:   Lo! hell lurketh in ambush,
Yusufali:    For the transgressors a place of destination:
Pickthall:   A home for the rebellious.
Yusufali:    They will dwell therein for ages.
Pickthall:   They will abide therein for ages.
Yusufali:    Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink,
Pickthall:   Therein taste they neither coolness nor (any) drink
Yusufali:    Save a boiling fluid and a fluid, dark, murky, intensely cold,
Pickthall:   Save boiling water and a paralysing cold:
Yusufali:    A fitting recompense (for them).
Pickthall:   Reward proportioned (to their evil deeds).
Yusufali:    For that they used not to fear any account (for their deeds),
Pickthall:   For lo! they looked not for a reckoning;
Yusufali:    But they (impudently) treated Our Signs as false.
Pickthall:   They called Our revelations false with strong denial.
Yusufali:    And all things have We preserved on record.
Pickthall:   Everything have We recorded in a Book.
Yusufali:    "So taste ye (the fruits of your deeds); for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment."
Pickthall:   So taste (of that which ye have earned). No increase do We give you save of torment.
Yusufali:    Verily for the Righteous there will be a fulfilment of (the heart's) desires;
Pickthall:   Lo! for the duteous is achievement -
Yusufali:    Gardens enclosed, and grapevines;
Pickthall:   Gardens enclosed and vineyards,
Yusufali:    Companions of equal age;
Pickthall:   And maidens for companions,
Yusufali:    And a cup full (to the brim).
Pickthall:   And a full cup.
Yusufali:    No vanity shall they hear therein, nor Untruth:-
Pickthall:   There hear they never vain discourse, nor lying -
Yusufali:    Recompense from thy Lord, a gift, (amply) sufficient,
Pickthall:   Requital from thy Lord - a gift in payment -
Yusufali:    (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, (God) Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him.
Pickthall:   Lord of the heavens and the earth, and (all) that is between them, the Beneficent; with Whom none can converse.
Yusufali:    The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by (God) Most Gracious, and He will say what is right.
Pickthall:   On the day when the angels and the Spirit stand arrayed, they speak not, saving him whom the Beneficent alloweth and who speaketh right.
Yusufali:    That Day will be the sure Reality: Therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) return to his Lord!
Pickthall:   That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord.
Yusufali:    Verily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were (metre) dust!"
Pickthall:   Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!"

Let us pray (Sura 20, Ayat 114) 'Ya Rabbi Zidni Ilma!' ('O Lord! Increase me in knowledge.') and seek spiritual help (ta'yid) to understand our great faith.
