Holy Quran Verses from Pickthall and Yusufali's Translations

Surah Muddassir: The Cloaked One

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

074.001
Yusufali:    O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)!
Pickthall:   O thou enveloped in thy cloak,
074.002
Yusufali:    Arise and deliver thy warning!
Pickthall:   Arise and warn!
074.003
Yusufali:    And thy Lord do thou magnify!
Pickthall:   Thy Lord magnify,
074.004
Yusufali:    And thy garments keep free from stain!
Pickthall:   Thy raiment purify,
074.005
Yusufali:    And all abomination shun!
Pickthall:   Pollution shun!
074.006
Yusufali:    Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)!
Pickthall:   And show not favour, seeking wordly gain!
074.007
Yusufali:    But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant!
Pickthall:   For the sake of thy Lord, be patient!
074.008
Yusufali:    Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded,
Pickthall:   For when the trumpet shall sound,
074.009
Yusufali:    That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,-
Pickthall:   Surely that day will be a day of anguish,
074.010
Yusufali:    Far from easy for those without Faith.
Pickthall:   Not of ease, for disbelievers.
074.011
Yusufali:    Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!-
Pickthall:   Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely,
074.012
Yusufali:    To whom I granted resources in abundance,
Pickthall:   And then bestowed upon him ample means,
074.013
Yusufali:    And sons to be by his side!-
Pickthall:   And sons abiding in his presence
074.014
Yusufali:    To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable!
Pickthall:   And made (life) smooth for him.
074.015
Yusufali:    Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);-
Pickthall:   Yet he desireth that I should give more.
074.016
Yusufali:    By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!
Pickthall:   Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations.
074.017
Yusufali:    Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!
Pickthall:   On him I shall impose a fearful doom.
074.018
Yusufali:    For he thought and he plotted;-
Pickthall:   For lo! he did consider; then he planned -
074.019
Yusufali:    And woe to him! How he plotted!-
Pickthall:   (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned!
074.020
Yusufali:    Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!-
Pickthall:   Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! -
074.021
Yusufali:    Then he looked round;
Pickthall:   Then looked he,
074.022
Yusufali:    Then he frowned and he scowled;
Pickthall:   Then frowned he and showed displeasure.
074.023
Yusufali:    Then he turned back and was haughty;
Pickthall:   Then turned he away in pride
074.024
Yusufali:    Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old;
Pickthall:   And said: This is naught else than magic from of old;
074.025
Yusufali:    "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!"
Pickthall:   This is naught else than speech of mortal man.
074.026
Yusufali:    Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire!
Pickthall:   Him shall I fling unto the burning.
074.027
Yusufali:    And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is?
Pickthall:   - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! -
074.028
Yusufali:    Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!-
Pickthall:   It leaveth naught; it spareth naught
074.029
Yusufali:    Darkening and changing the colour of man!
Pickthall:   It shrivelleth the man.
074.030
Yusufali:    Over it are Nineteen.
Pickthall:   Above it are nineteen.
074.031
Yusufali:    And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth God intend by this ?" Thus doth God leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.
Pickthall:   We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals.
074.032
Yusufali:    Nay, verily: By the Moon,
Pickthall:   Nay, by the Moon
074.033
Yusufali:    And by the Night as it retreateth,
Pickthall:   And the night when it withdraweth
074.034
Yusufali:    And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,-
Pickthall:   And the dawn when it shineth forth,
074.035
Yusufali:    This is but one of the mighty (portents),
Pickthall:   Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents)
074.036
Yusufali:    A warning to mankind,-
Pickthall:   As a warning unto men,
074.037
Yusufali:    To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;-
Pickthall:   Unto him of you who will advance or hang back.
074.038
Yusufali:    Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds.
Pickthall:   Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds;
074.039
Yusufali:    Except the Companions of the Right Hand.
Pickthall:   Save those who will stand on the right hand.
074.040
Yusufali:    (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other,
Pickthall:   In gardens they will ask one another
074.041
Yusufali:    And (ask) of the Sinners:
Pickthall:   Concerning the guilty:
074.042
Yusufali:    "What led you into Hell Fire?"
Pickthall:   What hath brought you to this burning?
074.043
Yusufali:    They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;
Pickthall:   They will answer: We were not of those who prayed
074.044
Yusufali:    "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent;
Pickthall:   Nor did we feed the wretched.
074.045
Yusufali:    "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;
Pickthall:   We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders,
074.046
Yusufali:    "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,
Pickthall:   And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,
074.047
Yusufali:    "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."
Pickthall:   Till the Inevitable came unto us.
074.048
Yusufali:    Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.
Pickthall:   The mediation of no mediators will avail them then.
074.049
Yusufali:    Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-
Pickthall:   Why now turn they away from the Admonishment,
074.050
Yusufali:    As if they were affrighted asses,
Pickthall:   As they were frightened asses
074.051
Yusufali:    Fleeing from a lion!
Pickthall:   Fleeing from a lion?
074.052
Yusufali:    Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!
Pickthall:   Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah).
074.053
Yusufali:    By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter,
Pickthall:   Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter.
074.054
Yusufali:    Nay, this surely is an admonition:
Pickthall:   Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment.
074.055
Yusufali:    Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!
Pickthall:   So whosoever will may heed.
074.056
Yusufali:    But none will keep it in remembrance except as God wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.
Pickthall:   And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy.

Let us pray (Sura 20, Ayat 114) 'Ya Rabbi Zidni Ilma!' ('O Lord! Increase me in knowledge.') and seek spiritual help (ta'yid) to understand our great faith.
